I was trying to think of how to describe Essex (UK) raised singer Elainee, and then it struck me. The answer was there in right in front of me all the time. Elainee is simply a ‘Living Doll’…
A ‘Living Doll’ wrapped-up in a media mystery that evokes many intriguing questions, I may add.
Elainee who plays guitar and writes her own songs has also taken voice lessons from Debbie Harry’s vocal coach.
If you put Doris Day, Amanda Lear and Marianne Faithfull into a large mixing bowl and whipped in some honey and cream, you’d probably come out with the latest media-hyped British singing sensation, Elainee.
Just who is Elainee? Where does she come from? But mostly where is she going?
These are questions amongst many others, we and most music fans have been asking, since the release of her brand new version of ‘Living Doll’.
For those not old enough to remember, ‘Living Doll’ is a Lionel Bart song made popular by Cliff Richard and the Shadows in 1959. Twenty-seven years later in 1986 Cliff Richard and The Young Ones re-released another version of this song. On both occasions, ‘Living Doll’ went to N#1 in the U.K.
The question is, in 2012, will Elainee’s version receive the same national success? And if so, why should it?
And what exactly does her version sound like anyway?
Well Elainee’s ‘Living Doll’ adds nothing new to the older versions, nor does the newer version subtract anything from the old versions.
Well, we’re just as confused as you are. We weren’t expecting another version of ‘Living Doll’ in 2012 either.
It would be fair to say however, that this version is pure retro shock, in an age of electronic samples and hiphop.
If you needed the anti David Guetta or Kanye West fightback, Elainee’s ‘Living Doll’ could be no better choice.
She turns the tables completely upside down, kicking out modern-day pop fundamentals. No hip driving beats. No Autotune in-sync singing, no rapping and no titles reading, “featuring Mr.Cool Voice aka…whatever”.
She just fronts a straight old-time jingle-jangle beat, wading politely through her lines. Cute, clean and inoffensive.
“How will she ever make it then?” you’re asking.
Well for starters, her Facebook fanpage has already clocked up 25,000 likes, and on Twitter she has over 20,000 followers. Which means that this lady and/or her promotion company, know how to hype it with the best of them.
Her approach to media-related phenomena thusfar, has been impeccable to say the least. As any serious record label or music promotion company will tell you. To sell music today you need to be viral, which means you have to be everywhere in a big, big way. To do this you first have to create something special, something that will have a ready-made niche market just waiting for you to manipulate.
The “creation” of Elainee and the ‘Living Doll’ project seems like a brilliant attempt to corner such a market, maybe made up of 60’s nostalgics and a large slice of the modern-day youth, who believe anything retro-sounding, to be ultra chic.
Just like everybody else, we’re fascinated to see where Elainee’s offbeat singing style and creatively aggressive media campaign will eventually lead her.
After fifty-three years and hitting N#1 twice in it’s long history, ‘Living Doll’ has successfully stood the test of time.
Now can London-based artist Elainee do the same?
And quite frankly, what does Harry Rodger Webb think about Elainee’s attempt to conquer the pop music world with ‘Living Doll’ for the third time in music history?
