Whiskey Sharts: “#2” – an emotional roller-coaster with a smile on its face

Initially founded by the late Stan Mason Dixon, Whiskey Sharts is a more than devilish Southern rock band act hailing from Shartsville, who find their captivating strength in innumerable lewd and crude insinuations delivered via ass-kicking musical arrangements made up of crunchy, twanging guitars and sweet harmonies to seduce us. Quite simply, Trace Harlan Edwin Crooks, Rico Planeta, Beaver Davenport, Keith Fucking Jackson, Snake Whissken and Rico form an atypical rock band that is prepared to change the face of music…by squatting right on top of it!

whiskey-sharts-2-coverWhiskey Sharts depends on a mixture of comedic situations and lovable instrumentation to produce their well-crafted rocking schtick. Singing with their virility hanging out, the band constantly returns to sexual subjects, to the obvious delight of their fans.

How else would you describe the success of upbeat emotional roller-coaster songs such as “Titties”: “Titties, I love titties. It don’t matter who you are, if you show titties, you’re the star!” Experiencing the Whiskey Sharts  on their new EP “#2”, is akin to a young boy listening spellbound while an older brother gives him the rundown on all things taboo and includes all the saucy details too.

The Whiskey Sharts’ comedy also requires an entirely appropriate amount of swearing (to the point of near comic genius), perpetual proclamations of personal greatness, and the frequent display of rampant ego ready to destroy any humble submissiveness.

Checkout the hilarious, heartrending mid-tempo ballad, “Pick Up Fuck”: “I see a man in a pick-up truck. I see a girl that I wanna fuck, and she’s sitting next to him. His got a shit eating grin, and I swear I’m gonna win her heart from him.”

What is most surprising and amusing about the Whiskey Sharts’, though, is that they are spectacular musicians. Their songs may provide a vehicle for their comedy, but the tunes are so damn catchy and well executed that listening to the same routine repeatedly doesn’t ever get old.

whiskey-sharts-liveThe Whiskey Sharts’ make their Southern rock music epic-sounding, without compromising their crassness, and you can fully witness and appreciate their vocal and musical prowess on “Complicated”. A song and performance with so much rhythm, grit, melody and harmony that even a band like the Tedeschi Trucks Band would be proud of having it in their catalog.

That the Whiskey Sharts’ are not just occupied with things sexual is apparent on “I Love Marijuana”. The title may say it all, lyrically, but those luscious chain-gang harmonies at the beginning of the track say so much more about the intrinsic quality of this band.

And when they crank up those screeching, rustic guitar riffs, and the song kicks in for real, all country-rock hell breaks loose. “Go on Go”, is another song the Tedeschi Trucks Band would die for. This deadly serious musical ode is a piano-dominated ballad made up of a soaring vocal melody wrapped tightly in a thickly layered musical soundscape, smothered with tons of harmony.

Throughout this EP, the Whiskey Sharts show us that they sure know how to make people laugh. But when they really need to, they can bring a tender tear to any eye. “Go on Go” plays perfect testimony to this.
