After stints in two prior bands, Billy K has surrounded himself with the right likeminded musicians to bring his anecdotal, prototype Country to fans. True in the vein of contemporary Nashville, the band has released Outrun The Rain—11-tracks of archetypical honky stomp tunes laced with the occasional down tempo Country ballad.

The album opens with “Shoot Me At The Juke Box” and its bent note electric, banjo picking and standard Country instrumentation. Foreshadowing the tracks to follow, the real highlight of the Billy K Band is the vocally driven ethos of the tracks. Billy K sings with just the right amount of twang to lend honesty to the songs without sounding contrived. Title track “Outrun The Rain” changes the album tempo with its slowed balladesque pace. Instrumentation takes a slight retreat through the verses, allowing the foreground for the vocals and their lyrical message. Backing organ, time-keeping percussion and electric finger work bolster this one. “Enjoy The Ride” is, in essence, a love song only country fried. Lyrically, the story of “man meets his match” is told through lyrics that are clever, not campy (as much of contemporary Country tends to do). Banjo reappears along with more ubiquitous electric slide work, crafting this into a sure radio friendly single. Finally, if Jimmy Buffet wrote Country tunes it would sound a lot like “Semi-Retired.” Piano, strings and Country-electric-straddling-Blues notes are the backing instrumentation in another clever, anecdotal story-song. Billy K Band – Outrun The Rain

“Shoot Me At The Juke Box” remains my personal stand-out track on the album and really captures the true spirit of the Billy K Band. At it’s core, the tune has a rootsy swamp-rock rhythm, sprinkled with a light bluegrass twang and all wrapped up in a polished contemporary country arrangement. Totally showing off Billy K’s flexibility and range as he merges a variety of styles to create his own sound.  As a listening experience, “Shoot Me At The Juke Box” will keep you on your toes. Billy K’s voice meshes together flawlessly with the driving music and by the end of the song you’ll find yourself tapping your foot and moving to the exceptional guitar work and almost funky beat.

THE BILLY K STORY SO FAR…

Billy grew up in the Central Valley of California. He was operating farm equipment and heavy machinery at an early age. Being outdoors, fishing, hunting and playing a guitar came natural. Billy eventually moved to Oklahoma and has worked with many unique and interesting people, including George Foreman (Yes he was a legendary boxer before he had the grills), Deion Sanders, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert. Bill has also been on VH1 reality show “Legend Hunters” with Real and Chance that aired in September of 2010. Billy has been playing and recording music for the past 20 years. He has recently had an opportunity to cut his Nashville Debut Album “Outrun the Rain, which was recorded at The Tracking Room in Nashville and produced by Buddy Hyatt. The Album was made possible by being part of the American Artist Showcase and Billy’s Manager Rickey Lee Watson.
