Emaculant is not your average hip hop artist. His music and lyrics aren’t staged, he isn’t pretending. His tracks are all about his struggles and hardship, about his quest to climb to the top of the music scene, from his underground origins to an upcoming EP that encloses references to the best and most compelling hip hop artists of all times.

His backing tracks are pure old school, with that crunchy analog drum machine sound dominating the grooves. There are many smooth samples and multi-layered synths, electric piano and loops that complement the lyrical flow without over-shadowing it. The vocals and the rap flow, is indeed the most compelling element in Emaculant’s music. Sharp, witting, articulate and fast, this rapper is not afraid to speak up honestly. He truly takes a standpoint, creating something real and tangible in a music world that is becoming all about plastic teen pop idols. This music has more to share with legends such as Erik B and Rakim, A tribe called Quest or the earlier LL Cool J, rather than most of the shallow, commercial hip hop scene of today.

Emaculant has recently released some new singles “Better Dayz”, “Words For Mecano” and “Emotions” where he features with J.Claris. On these tracks Emaculant continues to deliver his classic bass-thumping, heavily jazzed-up beats. It’s because of tracks like these that it pays to keep an open mind. Much like rock, hip-hop over the past decade has been largely a non-stop parade of mediocrity, but Emaculant provides proof of just how much potential the genre actually has. Instead of focusing too much on establishing a gangster image or blasting the listener’s eardrums with mindless verses,  Emaculant mixes the seemingly contradictory poles of jazz, soul and rap with more musicality and intelligence than anyone would expect.

Emaculant spits out witticisms with a flow that will put many of his peers to shame. The jazzy beats in the background give the music a warm and organic feel, in sharp contrast to the assembly-line beats that predominate in hip-hop these days. Perhaps most importantly, the songs here are all irresistibly catchy. If you can’t bob your head to tunes like “Better Dayz”, “Words For Mecano” and “Emotions” chances are you’re way too uptight.

Emaculant’s catalog is a great reminder of how simple things like depth, intelligence and pure artistry makes for great music. That’s certainly a lesson that more artists from every genre would be well advised to heed.
