After several years of collaborating with fellow musicians and producing demos for local singers/songwriters, Montreal native Frank Roberts will be releasing his debut EP, “Change in Motion”, through Wildfrog Music on December 4th. Produced, engineered and mixed by Roberts himself, “Change in Motion” showcases his musical versatility and stylistic playing through an instrumental adventure fueled with colorful guitar harmonies and melodies.

The full version of the new single “Conflicting Ambitions” is currently available for streaming on the Frank Roberts website. On December 4th, the “Change in Motion” EP will also be available for purchase on the Frank Roberts website, as well as online stores such as CD Baby, iTunes, Facebook, Amazon and many more. Following the EP release, a bonus track giveaway will be offered on Roberts’ Facebook page.

I challenge any indie artist to release a more accessible instrumental rock Ep than Frank Roberts’ “Change in Motion.” Not being able to play the guitar is hardly an impediment to enjoying his music and that’s probably the best thing about Frank. You don’t need to be a musician yourself to love his songs.

Frank eschews needless self-indulgence like most ‘guitar heroes’ and just plays rocking songs with interesting melodies. My favorite tunes are “Change In Motion,” an exhilarating song with mind-bending solos and some good hooks and “Under The Cali Sun,” a great ballad that flows naturally and beautifully. However every song here is excellent, from the epic and grunge-rock sounding “The Missing Element” to the funky hard-rocker “Conflicting Ambitions.”

Frank Roberts, backed by his own guitars, bass and drum programming has put together an Ep of fantastic performances with “Change In Motion.” His melodies are catchy and exciting, the arrangements are fully realized and detailed, and his playing is fierce and accurate. The Ep shows in a very inspiring way what a great musician he is. If you are a guitar player or have a good ear for talented and thoughtful music, then you should pick this one up in a heartbeat.

Unlike most guitar instrumental album’s this one is never pretentious, overlong or unlistenable. And even though Frank Roberts gives the impression that he can shred and go off on a tangent with the best of them, he chooses never to overplay. Instead, the music is all about the tone, the feel, the arrangement, and the melody, rather than just going in the studio and recording whacked-out jams.

This is a really, strong consistent album, where every song is extremely catchy, given the fact that they’re all instrumentals. It is also the testament of Frank’s talent to deliver melodic punch all the way through each song.

If you’re looking for melody and emotion, this Ep is drenched in it. Frank Roberts shows no limits to his creativity as an artist, engineer and producer. His playing paints a different picture every time, from totally kick-ass to totally haunting to gently romantic, with everything in between.

This Ep is for anyone who enjoys solid rock or great guitar playing. Highly recommended.
