UNIVERSO is a Brazilian band led by Leo Bor, the founder and producer of the project. The band’s sound ranges from Pop to Rock and even hints towards R&B, Blues and Metal. Universo consists of (for recordings): Leo Bor ( Electric Guitars, Bass, Acoustic Guitars, Keyboard, Drums, Synths etc.), Jack ( Male lead and backing vocals), Meika ( Female lead and backing vocals), while for live shows they are joined by Dell and Rafa.

universo-leo-680A while back we reviewed UNIVERSO ‘s self-titled album which features a rich blend of power-pop with solid percussion, rich harmonies, and robust vocals worked into phat rock riffs. Of all the tracks, the ones that really stood out for us were the instrumentals “Super Nova”, “5 Sinfonia de Beethoven”, “Brisa”, “9 Sinfonia de Beethoven” and “Pulsares” which all deliver some great guitar licks by Leo Bor. Having said that though, the vocal tracks don’t fall much further behind; producing songs that have a “radio friendly” sound associated with worldwide hits. There is a vast mix of up-tempo and slow ballads to feed all ears. If you have a predilection for either male or female vocals it’s all there too!

The album, four years in the making is superbly produced, proving that UNIVERSO are as contemporary as anybody. The album features gorgeous arrangements, first-rate material, and it will open up the ears of a whole new generation of fans.

Of course a large part of UNIVERSO’s successful sound is directly proportionate to Leo Bor’s talents as a songwriter, performer and producer. Recording distorted guitars and banging drums is not enough to make a great rock album. Therefore Leo transforms himself from guitar player extraordinaire to keyboardist, bassist, drummer and then onto producing, showing all his love for rock music.

However it is on guitar that Leo shines brightest. He solos in a style that is both melodic and intensely rhythmic, giving the songs another dimension. Leo also shows off his rocking technique on Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Bach’s Toccata & Fugue, Bach’s Jesus Joy of Men and Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca.

UNIVERSO obviously set out to make a great record with the self-titled album and ultimately that is what he did. It is great because of its variety and Leo’s instrumental prowess into multiple genres and worldly music. Not to mention the production quality and high standards all throughout.

On the album UNIVERSO deliver something like 29 tracks, from the most disparate styles and genres between romantic and red-hot rock. And that brings me to the only advice I could give Leo, to capture the US or European markets, if that is his intention. He should maybe narrow and focus the UNIVERSO sound to just one area, as mass markets get desperately confused when talented artists cover more ground than their ears can handle.

Leo is currently working on an upcoming album with dynamic new singer Dayane Scalzer. So who knows what he may be having up his sleeve for this new release!
