Oleg Prodeus is a singer/songwriter, a multi-instrumentalist and a music producer, a multimedia artist and a filmmaker/director.

He was born in the former Soviet Union and has been living and working in Vienna since 1990.

He has composed and produced 3 solo albums, “To the Sky”(1997), “Collective Farm”(2000), and the newly released “The 13”, which has been published in both the English and Russian languages. Oleg has toured Austria extensively with his music projects. In 2004 he composed and co-produced 5 songs for the film soundtrack of Pepe Danquart’s motion picture “C(r)ook” (Dor Film, Germany/Austria).

“The 13”, is a collection of intuitive and passionate songs with moving melodies, complex arrangements and hypnotic singing. The majestic soundscapes and the irresistible charm of Russian melancholy provide the music with an unique personal signature.

Multi-talented Russian-born artist OLEG PRODEUS

The album, which was produced in cooperation with the music producer Niko Stoessl, is according to it’s creator, “a poetical and philosophical last word for mankind’s relentless search for his own identity, for the human essence that is within him, and is also a plea for the hope of harmony and love.”

Noting all of Oleg’s professional qualities, I decided to watch the video of the album’s opening track ‘Savior’, before actually delving into the album itself. I thought that this would quickly give me an all round, inside glimpse of the artist, him being the almost sole creator and executor of all the media production involved.

‘Striking!’ is the first word which came to mind. Oleg Prodeus is a creatively talented visionary. His flair for detail when manipulating sound and images are impressive to say the least. On ‘Savior’ every frame and note is intense, emotional and of a dramatically high impact. The driving synthbass-dominated rhythm and falsetto choruses are haunting and disturbing, as Oleg describes a falling angel and his painful eternal life on earth.

I find it hard to exclude images when talking about Oleg’s work on this album. It is so absolutely clear that this artist’s creative juices work at 360° degrees, that I am certain he writes his music with the pictures already elaborated and freeze-framed in his brilliant mind.

On ‘Can You Feel The Rain’, Oleg demonstrates that he can even write a simple pop melody and catchy chorus line…with the added extras of course. As Oleg layers the choruses with ethereal vocal harmonies and shimmering synthesizers.

Oleg Prodeus‘ music orientation is comparable to The Muse, if you’re looking to pigeon-hole the sound, but over and above the world-wide fame of the latter, Oleg’s musical creations need never be in awe of their, or anybody else’s works in this modern-pop genre.

Listen to the stunning musical arrangement and vocal delivery on “Mother”, which captures the genius and passion this Russian born artist puts into his creative work.

I desperately flipped through the tracks trying to find a weak point or song that wasn’t quite up to this albums superior standards.

Alas, there was none, each track sounded better than the previous one and I discovered only highlights, or rather songs which had a stronger appeal personal appeal for me.

Like the acoustic guitar driven ‘Do You Know Why’ or the hook-filled ‘Last Hero In ‘This Universe’. The powerfully tormented ballad ‘Cross The Line’ or the shuffling backbeat of ‘Over You And Me’. But I soon find myself mentioning each and every track…

No Banner to display

Which draws me to the conclusion, that this is probably, at least up until now, the most brilliant independent music album I have heard this year.

Oleg Prodeus has produced a modern-day pop masterpiece. This 13-track album has everything. Catchy songs, profound lyrics, creative musical arrangements, essential vocal harmonies…

…and then it has Oleg Prodeus. A multi-talented genius who manipulates sounds and images with immense passion and ease.

If you can only afford one album this year. Indie or Major label. This is the one to get!
