Pia Dean is a new UK indie songwriter who works with guest vocalists and has musical influences that cross various genres. Including Amy Winehouse, James Morrison, U2, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, KOL, and Beyonce amongst others.

Having worked in the music business for over 25 years, I’ve learned that to really appreciate a piece of music you have to listen to it, prior to having been exposed to any visual imagery regarding the music in question. This limits and moreover articulates your senses strictly to the audio qualities of the piece you’re evaluating.

In recent years this has become more difficult with the advancing media possibilities on offer. It’s almost impossible to listen to any music without being exposed to the over-hyped accompanying imagery, be it video,TV or pictures, which inevitably captures your attention, changing the final evaluation equation. Imagery also disseminates it’s specifically intended messages, without leaving much room for personal interpretations of the songs.

However on the rare occasion, I have had the pleasure of discovering new music without the hyped imagery first. It occurred years ago with Anastasia whose ‘soulful black’ sounding vocals blew me away while listening to the radio on my way to work, only to discover that she was a ‘white soul’ singer!
And more recently James Morrison had a similar affect on me.

When evaluating music, I normally first put the faith in my ears before conceding my eyes in any assignment. So when I went ahead, on discovering the talents of indie songwriter Pia Dean, I was almost instantly skeptical.

Low and behold, on her profile page was a stunning black and white picture of Pia with her acoustic six-string in hand.

I’m not actually sure how many minutes elapsed before I was able to drag my eyes off that photograph, but Pia Dean, simply dressed in a t-shirt and jeans, came across as hypnotically and breathtakingly beautiful.

A similar innocently intense beauty, had once captured my attention in much the same way, many years before. It belonged to Sharleen Spiteri lead singer of the excellent and once world-renowned pop band – Texas.

Which obviously had me very concerned about the music…

So I quickly searched the first song I could find and clicked play. It was 6:10 an acoustic-mix demo. And I was hypnotized for the second time.

Apart from the superb vocal interpretation served by the guest singer, Ms.Pia Dean quickly demonstrates that she truly knows her way around a smooth, modern and warm streetwise melody.

Without a pause I flew across to the second track, because I needed convincing, that it was not still my eyes, that were listening to Pia. “Achilles Heal” featuring singer Nikki Dine-Hart provided me with much needed solace. Pia Dean really does constructs pop melodies like they should be. Quiet verses and soaring choruses, all beautifully layered with straightforward, heartfelt lyrics and endearing harmonies.

At this point in time I wasn’t evaluating anymore but listening for personal enjoyment. Up came “Hot Coals” a R n’ B styled mid-tempo lament with it’s cool, glossy Billboard top 100 acoustic guitar, pick and strum rhythm.

Down the line followed, “Another Maybe” featuring Caroline Langford, which is very Americana sounding and “Wasteland” which takes us back to the soulful R n’ B beat idiom, very reminiscent of works by USA artist Robin Thicke.

Songwriting is a tough and often ingrate craft, as it’s normally the performers who get all the public glory. However we’re certain that UK indie songwriter, Pia Dean has what it takes to write a good song. All she needs is continued determination, a sharp music publisher and the necessary breaks.

….and maybe if she flaunted that b&w profile pic around record company offices too, she’d only be using their same guerrilla selling tactics!

Go for it girl!
