Martin Lucassen is a folk rock singer-songwriter originally from the Netherlands. Martin picked up a guitar in September of 2014 and struggled through the learning process. He then made the decision to improve his skills in writing lyrics, melody and singing. Martin quickly realized that his vocals weren’t as advanced as he would have liked so he sought out vocal training. Now more comfortable with his musical abilities, Martin decided to seek out the assistance of an American production company.
Once he found a company he could trust, he sent in a demo of one of his original songs. After making a few changes and additions, the company mixed and mastered the demo into a finalized song. The results shocked Martin. He couldn’t believe that in just a few months, he had completed his first song and was receiving great feedback.
Now Martin Lucassen has released the 12-track album, “The Night Turns To Morning Light”, and it is truly hard to believe that this singer-songwriter has been able to deliver a recording of such impeccable quality, on all levels, in an almost impossibly short and inhibiting time-frame for any new artist. Never mind one, who picked up his first guitar in 2014!
Yet contrary to all logical explanations, “The Night Turns To Morning Light”, is an excellent Adult Orientated Pop-Rock album, full of great music, admirably performed and sung. All the twelve tracks come together to form a classic recording. The recording quality and choice of instruments is excellent. I don’t think there is one song on this album that I don’t really like.
Standouts range from the beautiful, longing and urgent “Come To Me”, to the pretty “What Do You Mean” and “I Love You More”, to the songs that rock out “Love You From Scratch” and “Love Me Right Now”. But to me, the highlights of the album are the heart-tugging “Break The Glass”, “How Will It Be” and “Beauty All Around”.
All-round though, this album brings out a wide range of emotions, through really well-played, well-conceived songs. There is also an unusually solid blend of great lyrics that plants images in your head and induces contemplation; exactly what good music is supposed to do!
Songwriting is no trifle matter, even for well-navigated musicians, but Martin Lucassen takes everything in his stride, plying the techniques he has so quickly learned, as well as the natural creativity he has accumulated in his mind and soul. The result is a melodic mélange of upbeat and slower songs that are both accessible and catchy. The music fits every niche and cranny.
A little philosophical, a lot melodic, “The Night Turns To Morning Light” will continue to stay fresh for a very long time!
