Fabpz the Freelancer: “Ur DayLightz” – nothing detracts from the booming rhythm

The common idea is that Dancehall reggae and raggamuffin is nothing if not trend-based, and for potty-mouthed, gun-talking DJs to suddenly strike intense, prayerful poses on their album covers, arrange their playlists into pseudo-suites, and give their albums pretentious, apocalyptic titles. On Fabp aka Fabpz the Freelancer’s latest, the single cover pose is a whole lot easier to take seriously, and the title is really simple to grasp – “Ur DayLightz”.

Add that to the fact that Fabpz’s music mostly focuses on slow groove and playful lyrics rather than on ersatz spirituality; his singing and chatting are in his uniquely uneven but mostly impressive style, and he’s at his best when he’s at his most declamatory. Nothing detracts from the booming rhythm, and when Fabpz the Freelancer eases into singjay mode on “Ur DayLightz” things slide into motion rather nicely.

He’s even more assured on here than on previous releases and his sharp, reggaeton-flavored delivery is as usual plaintive and actually quite touching.  Fabpz’s stark and powerful performance is as always built on an uncharacteristically stripped-down rhythm that bangs. This track once again marks an interesting stage in Fabpz the Freelancer’s musical development.

Hard-edged and sometimes abrasive sonically, “Ur DayLightz” thrives on a distorted rhythm for its own sake, as Fabpz usually has little or no use for over-elaborated melodies or harmony in his storytelling. This is a strange but highly effective formula that could only work with an atypical and eclectic crossover ragamuffin artist such as Fabp aka Fabpz the Freelancer. Effectively muscled-up by his singjay chat style, Fabpz’s music beat formula provides a nice sort of punctuation scattered among his colorful lyrical manifestations.
